Warts are unwanted skin growths, raised bumps on the skin, caused by the human papillomavirus (HPV). Warts can be contagious. They can also cause pain and discomfort to people. It is recommended to consult a medical professional for treatment.

Warts are harmless and in most cases, they will go away on their own over time. However, they are cosmetically irritating. Additionally, some, such as those found on the soles of the feet, may make walking and exercising difficult. As a result, it is an undoubted reality in terms of general health that they should be treated under all conditions.

In this article, we will talk about the causes of warts and professional wart treatments in the first part; in the second part, you can read about subjects like when to seek medical help for warts and choosing the right wart treatment.

Causes of Warts

Warts are subjects of dermatology and are caused by the overgrowth of skin cells after being infected with the Human papillomavirus (HPV). There is always the risk of contracting HPV when we shake hands with someone or touch a surface in daily life. However, this virus only thrives in some. It is stated that some people are more prone to getting the virus that will cause warts.

Some types of HPV that are transmitted through sexual contact cause genital and anal warts. Some specific types of HPV pose a risk of cancer of the cervix and anus. However, it is rare for HPV, which causes skin warts, to cause skin cancer.

Damaged or broken skin is another reason. Warts are more likely to develop on skin that is damaged, cut, or injured. The virus can enter the body through these openings in the skin, making it easier for warts to form. Poor personal hygiene is another factor in getting warts.

Professional Wart Treatments

Various professional wart treatments are available. The choice of treatment depends on the type, size, and location of the wart, as well as on the person's preferences and medical history. A dermatologist consultation should be considered to choose far-a-wart treatment. Some wart treatments can be listed as follows:

  • Cryotherapy: It involves freezing the wart with liquid nitrogen. Extreme cold destroys the wart tissue, causing it to fall off. More than one session may be needed.
  • Electrosurgery and curettage: First, local anesthesia is applied to the warty area. In this procedure, the wart is first removed by cutting with a sharp instrument.  Electrosurgery is then used to burn off the remaining wart tissue and stop the bleeding.
  • Laser treatment: laser therapy is another sort of treatment used for warts. Laser treatment is preferred for warts that cover a large area and are challenging. It uses a beam of light to burn off the wart tissue.
  • Chemical peeling: It is usually applied by a dermatologist. Strong acids can be applied to remove the wart. There can be different wart removal procedures.
When to Seek Medical Help for Wart Treatment

Wart treatments can be varied for each case and each person. A wart may disappear by itself. However, If you have persistent warts, here are some situations where you should consider consulting a healthcare professional:

  • Uncertain diagnosis: If you are unsure whether the skin growth is a wart or another condition.
  • Painful or bleeding warts: Warts are usually painless but may require medical attention if the wart becomes painful or begins to bleed.
  • Warts on sensitive areas: Warts on the face, genitals, or body areas with sensitive skin may require professional treatment.
  • Large or multiple warts: If you have many warts or a large wart, this may require professional assistance.
  • Psychological distress: If warts cause you psychological problems or interfere with daily activities, it is recommended to seek medical help.
Choosing the Right Wart Treatment

There are many factors to consider when choosing the right wart treatment. For example, the type, location, and size of the wart. However, they have a very important place in personal preferences at this point. Here are some factors to consider when choosing a wart treatment:

  • Type of wart: Different types of warts may respond differently to treatments. Wart type and correct diagnosis are important for the success of the treatment. The healthiest solution is to get professional support from an expert.
  • Location of the wart: The location of the wart is important in the choice of treatment. Some treatments may not be suitable for certain body areas.
  • Time and convenience: Some treatments require more than one session. Considering your schedule and lifestyle will be beneficial for the success of treatment.

Cryotherapy, immunotherapy, salicylic acid, cryotherapy, and electrosurgery can be options for wart treatment as well.
